Despite pouring rain the Fledgling Competiton took place at Broxbourne HC on July 26th
Despite the continual rain on Sunday, July 26th, The final Fledging event for 2015-16 season took place at Broxbourne H.C Tom Godfrey opened the day with a vote of thanks to Simon Holloway on running a successful programme and on his long running support to Herts County over a number of years too numerous to mention.
The coaching team having arrived in the dry and done the set up for the competition and moved into position for registration, the heavens opened and the rain started only a couple of players didn't make the day who had previously said they were coming and these cry-offs were due to illness and injury.
With Tony Rollins running the young umpires and Dave Chatterjee running the central timing, the competition got under way in the rain. Each game was 7 minutes in duration. To make sure we didn't have to resort to penalties and to encourage shooting on goal and awarding the keepers a 2 tier scoring system was used. The first tier was the normal of 3 points for a win, 2 for a score draw and 1 point for a no score draw. The second scoring tier awarded a point for each goal scores and each save made.

The final was contested by Team 3 - BLUE and Team 9 - WHITE and was a magnificent end to the day with both sides scoring 2 goals in a free-flowing game. This meant that the 2 teams shared 1st place as the coaches had decided to remove the Tier 2 scoring for this final game.
I just want to mention one player - George Evans - because he turned up with his hair dyed pink as part of him raising money for Macmillan Nurses. A collection was made which his mum has told me raised £85 pounds on the day. George, I want to personally thank you for such a great commitment to a worthwhile cause.
On a personal note I would like to take this opportunity to thank all the coaches who have worked with me this year:
Roger Barrett
Charlie Bartlett

This is my last coaching activity for Hertfordshire after some 30 years of being a county coach. In my view this group of Fledglings was the best we have had since I started the programme some 4 years ago. I look forward to seeing these youngsters as they progress through the system.
